The Mental Health Worker I functions as a member of the interdisciplinary team to assess the functional abilities, impairments, and needs of each patient. This role provides support to nursing staff and patient care through the direction of licensed staff and leaders.

Day-to-day tasks include ensuring supplies and equipment are organized, monitoring patient information and stats, and assisting with activities of daily living. The worker also responds to patient and family requests promptly and follows proper procedures during verbal and physical de-escalation.

This position is based at Merit Health Rankin in Brandon, MS, working full-time day shifts (12-hour shifts, 7a-7p) with rotating weekends and holidays. The team environment emphasizes continuity of care and participation in program development and process improvement.

Requirements

  • 0-2 years of experience as a patient care assistant in a mental health hospital setting required.
  • BCLS - Basic Life Support certification required.
  • De-escalation Training Certification required.
  • Ability to assist with activities of daily living and non-medication pain management.
  • Knowledge of patient care policies, practices, and protocols including sterile technique and skin care protocol.
  • Skill in monitoring and recording patient information, test results, and stats accurately.
  • Ability to perform crisis intervention and physical restraint of violent patients.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure supplies and equipment for patient care are readily available and organized in an efficient manner.
  • Accurately monitor and record patient information, test results, and stats.
  • Provide care to assigned patients including activities of daily living, non-medication pain management, and other interventions.
  • Assist with personal hygiene and elimination needs, and provide clean linen and towels as needed.
  • Answer call system promptly and intervene appropriately.
  • Follow proper procedures during verbal and physical de-escalation of patients; individually perform crisis intervention and restrain violent patients.
  • Respond to all Code White alerts.
  • Participate in program development and process improvement to ensure continuity of professional care.
