About this role

The Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) provides safe, family-centered patient care by demonstrating specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding and human lactation. This role supports expectant and postpartum families through education, assessment, and individualized care planning to promote successful breastfeeding outcomes.

Day-to-day responsibilities include assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualized lactation care plans for breastfeeding and pumping patients. The CLC provides out-patient lactation consultations in person or by telephone, including follow-up support and referrals to appropriate programs and community resources.

This role collaborates with patients, families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary healthcare team members to provide comprehensive lactation support during prenatal and postpartum periods. The CLC also participates in discharge education on topics such as breast pumps, donor milk, and evidence-based lactation practices, and supports the Texas Ten Step initiative.

The position reports to the Program Manager of Grand Beginnings and operates within a hospital setting with office hours from 8am to 12am, including weekends and holidays, with an on-call phone rotation. Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) required.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written).
  • Ability to quickly learn and adapt to electronic health record systems for medical documentation.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology and abbreviations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, family-centered care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating individualized lactation care plans for breastfeeding and pumping patients.
  • Provide out-patient lactation consultations in person or by telephone, including follow-up support and referrals to appropriate programs and community resources.
  • Educate patients and families on breastfeeding techniques and pumping techniques, including proper use, cleaning, and maintenance of breast pumps and related supplies.
  • Serve as a breastfeeding advocate, supporting evidence-based practices and informed decision-making.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary healthcare team members to provide comprehensive lactation support during prenatal and postpartum periods.
  • Participate in discharge education on topics such as breast pumps, donor milk, and evidence-based lactation practices or resources.
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic health record.
