About this role

Mater Mothers' Springfield is seeking a Lactation Consultant to join us in a permanent, part-time (0.5 FTE) role. Based at our Springfield campus, this position is part of a landmark moment in Queensland healthcare with Mater Hospital Springfield opening early 2026.

This state-of-the-art facility will feature a mix of public and private beds across ICU, maternity, emergency, and medical-surgical services, caring for over 200,000 patients annually. The Lactation Consultant is a Clinical Midwife who has undertaken specific training to become a credentialed lactation nurse consultant through IBCLE.

In this role, you will educate new mothers and their families on best practices for establishing breastfeeding. You will also collaborate with other health professionals when mothers face challenges with breastfeeding, continuing, or ceasing their breastfeeding journey if needed.

As part of Mater Mothers' Hospitals—leaders in high-quality maternity and newborn services—you will provide collaborative care across Mater Health Services. This includes individual and group breastfeeding support and education for staff and families, with a special focus on those accessing our well-baby service.

Requirements

  • Current Midwifery registration
  • IBCLC (International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant) qualification
  • Experience in the area of full-term babies and breastfeeding support (desirable)
  • Demonstrated interest in the area of neonatology and preterm infants
  • Excellent time management skills
  • Experience and interest providing education while in the role of Lactation Consultant
  • Approachable with a mature and confident attitude
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, showing initiative and teamwork

Responsibilities

  • Educate new mothers and their families on best practices for establishing breastfeeding

  • Focus on supporting families accessing the well-baby service
  • Assist mothers with continuing or ceasing their breastfeeding journey as needed
