About this role

Sentara RMH Medical Center is seeking a part-time Lactation Consultant to help breastfeeding women and their families define and achieve their breastfeeding goals through evidence-based care, customer service, and cultural sensitivity.

The Lactation Consultant provides breastfeeding education to other healthcare team members and maintains clinical knowledge to meet practice standards required by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. This role involves assessing breastfeeding dyads and supporting mothers in the postpartum setting.

Sentara RMH is a Magnet designated 238-bed hospital serving a seven-county area with approximately 1,800 deliveries annually. The hospital has been part of the Harrisonburg community since 1912 and joined Sentara Health in 2011, offering a collaborative and caring workplace environment.

Requirements

  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Nursing (Required)
  • Master's degree in Nursing (Preferred)
  • IBCLC certification within 2 years of hire (Required)
  • Mother/Baby or Postpartum experience (Preferred)
  • Labor & Delivery experience (Preferred)
  • At least 2 years of relevant experience (Preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Help breastfeeding women and their families define and achieve their breastfeeding goals
  • Provide evidence-based care with cultural sensitivity and excellent customer service
  • Deliver breastfeeding education to other healthcare professional team members
  • Maintain clinical knowledge and skills to meet IBLCE lactation practice standards
  • Assess breastfeeding dyads and assist with latch, positioning, and milk supply issues
  • Document patient interactions and develop individualized care plans
  • Collaborate with nursing staff and providers to support breastfeeding continuity
