About this role
The Aga Khan University (AKU) School of Nursing and Midwifery-East Africa (SONAM) invites applications for a Clinical Instructor based in Nairobi, Kenya. This full-time role reports to the Associate Dean and is central to delivering high-quality clinical education in midwifery and nursing.
The Clinical Instructor is responsible for incorporating evidence-based practice into all teaching activities, primarily in clinical and laboratory settings (CIME) as well as in the classroom. The role involves assisting faculty in creating high-quality clinical experiences for students by serving as a liaison between faculty, clinical sites, and the School.
SONAM is a pioneer of Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) and Advanced Practice Midwifery (APM) programmes, as well as direct and post-basic undergraduate degrees for nurses and midwives in the region. The School operates on a work-study format, enabling students to continue practice while learning, and has partnerships to make programmes more accessible to working professionals.
This position offers the opportunity to contribute to health sector reform in East Africa through education and mentorship. The Clinical Instructor will work within a leading international university dedicated to academic excellence and social change, with a focus on quality, relevance, impact, and access.
Requirements
- Registered nurse or midwife with a valid practicing license
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing or Midwifery (Master's degree preferred)
- Clinical teaching experience in nursing or midwifery education
- Knowledge of evidence-based practice and its application in clinical teaching
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural academic environment
- Experience with clinical placement coordination and student evaluation
Responsibilities
- Incorporate evidence-based practice into teaching activities at SONAM
- Teach primarily in clinical and laboratory settings (CIME) as well as in the classroom
- Assist faculty in creating high-quality clinical experiences for students
- Serve as liaison between faculty, clinical sites, and the School of Nursing and Midwifery
- Support the coordination of clinical placements and student supervision
- Contribute to curriculum delivery and assessment in midwifery and nursing programmes
