As Head of Midwifery, provide strategic guidance and leadership to enhance patient safety, service quality, and exceptional patient experience. Advocate strongly for patients while driving quality care and fostering continuous improvement. Implement innovative strategies that empower the workforce, aligning with staff development plans and departmental objectives.

Cultivate a culture that engages staff and maximises their potential, ensuring motivation for optimal care and effective teamwork. Collaborate with the Director of Midwifery and Specialty Triumvirate to develop an annual business plan aligned with commissioning intentions. Work alongside the Head of Midwifery on the Isle of Wight during planned absences as part of a reciprocal arrangement.

Be part of the senior midwifery team on-call requirements, providing out of hours and weekend senior cover for maternity services. Accountable for direct delivery of operational maternity services 24/7, visible in clinical areas to promote high standards. Ensure clinical governance, risk management, and a positive safety culture.

Requirements

  • Registered Midwife with strategic leadership capabilities
  • Experience providing guidance to enhance patient safety, service quality, and patient experience
  • Ability to drive quality care, advocate for patients, and foster continuous improvement
  • Skills in clinical governance, risk management, and promoting a positive safety culture
  • Proficiency in workforce empowerment, staff development, and team motivation
  • Capability to develop business plans and align with commissioning intentions
  • Experience in maternity service operations and on-call senior cover

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for the direct delivery of operational maternity services 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, visible in clinical areas to promote high standards
  • Ensure appropriate clinical governance, risk management, quality and safety arrangements, and systems to monitor and manage risk
  • Develop strategic and annual service plans in collaboration with the Maternity and Divisional Management team
  • Monitor service performance against targets and develop action plans to meet performance goals
  • Manage the midwifery and support worker workforce, including planning, recruitment, selection, and career development
  • Ensure implementation and monitoring of personnel policies for staff with line management responsibility
  • Collaborate with the Director of Midwifery to develop an annual business plan aligned with organisational objectives
  • Provide senior on-call cover for maternity services out of hours and weekends
