About this role

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a clinically competent Lactation Consultant RN to join our New Life Maternity team in Geneva. This patient-first role supports breastfeeding patients and their families within a leading healthcare system dedicated to better health care.

In this PRN position, you will provide direct patient care, consult with nursing and medical staff, and assist in developing nursing care procedures for breastfeeding patients. You will also see patients at the outpatient clinic, facilitate breastfeeding classes at least three times a year, and support a weekly community support group as needed.

You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to evaluate and improve nursing care, integrating research findings and best evidence into practice. The role requires a minimum commitment of 48 hours within a six-week scheduling period, including one weekend per month and rotating holidays.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of Illinois.
  • CPR - Basic Life Support (BLS) certification via American Heart Association.
  • Certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultants (IBCLC).
  • Current experience within the past five years, or new nursing graduate within the past two years.
  • One year experience as a lactation consultant RN (preferred).
  • NRP certification (preferred).

Responsibilities

  • Assess and collect comprehensive data pertinent to the breastfeeding patient's health or situation.
  • Analyze assessment data to determine nursing diagnoses and identify expected outcomes individualized to the patient.
  • Develop and implement a plan of care that prescribes strategies to attain expected outcomes.
  • Coordinate care delivery and employ education strategies to promote health and a safe environment.
  • Evaluate progress toward attainment of outcomes and collaborate with patient, family, and other health team members.
  • Teach and demonstrate specific nursing care techniques related to the breastfeeding patient.
  • Assist in the development of nursing care procedures for the breastfeeding patient.
  • Facilitate breastfeeding classes at least three times per year and support the weekly community support group.
