About this role

Vanderbilt University Medical Center is seeking a dedicated RN IBCLC Lactation Consultant to join the 4 East Obstetrics team in Nashville, Tennessee. This role applies in-depth knowledge of a wide range of maternal and neonatal acute and chronic conditions that may affect breastfeeding.

In this position, you will assess and manage complex lactation problems, assisting mothers in attaining their individual breastfeeding goals. You will provide direct care for inpatient mother-baby couplets and neonates, functioning as a key member of the multi-disciplinary health care team.

As a consultant, educator, and mentor, you will develop and implement preparation for childbirth, newborn care, and breastfeeding classes for expectant and new parents. You will also create preceptorships, in-service programs, and continuing education on breastfeeding management for nursing staff, medical staff, and students in health care fields.

Requirements

  • Current RN licensure in the state of Tennessee or eligibility for licensure.
  • IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) certification required.
  • Intermediate proficiency in mentoring and coaching, demonstrating good training and mentoring practices.
  • Intermediate knowledge of lactation, with mastery in practical applications of a difficult nature.
  • Intermediate nursing patient education skills, capable of providing health education services without requiring instruction from others.
  • Novice proficiency in operations management.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct care for inpatient mother-baby couplets and neonates.
  • Develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and revises preparation for childbirth, newborn care, sibling preparation, postpartum, and breastfeeding classes for expectant and new parents.
  • Develops, organizes, implements, evaluates, and revises preceptorships, in-service programs, workshops, and continuing education classes on topics related to breastfeeding management for nursing staff, medical staff, and students of health care-related fields.
  • Assists in the management of the breast pump rental station.
  • Manages work flow in the perinatal education department.
  • Functions as a consultant, educator, and mentor to nurses, health care professionals, and patients.
