About this role

The Lactation Consultant promotes and coordinates patient care and educational activities related to lactation. This role encompasses consultation with inpatient and outpatient clients and health professionals in the hospital and community. These functions are performed in accordance with the hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

The consultant provides outpatient consults for breastfeeding mothers at the Baby & Me Support Center. They plan, implement, and evaluate breastfeeding education for patients, families, and staff. Additionally, they collect and analyze data to determine breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates.

The consultant works within St. Luke's University Health Network, a healthcare organization dedicated to excellence and improving access to care. They collaborate with health professionals and clinical staff to support lactating mothers and their infants.

The lactation consultant is required to obtain International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification within one year of hire. This role offers the opportunity to develop expertise in lactation and contribute to improving breastfeeding outcomes.

Requirements

  • Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) certification or completion of a Lactation Consultant Certification Program.
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification required within one year of hire.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with BSN or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) licensure.
  • Knowledge of current research literature and national standards of care for breastfeeding.
  • Experience in providing patient education and developing breastfeeding educational materials.

Responsibilities

  • Actively promotes breastfeeding and assists mothers in reaching their own breastfeeding goals.
  • Provides outpatient consults for breastfeeding mothers at the Baby & Me Support Center.
  • Develops and implements standards of care and guidelines for assisting breastfeeding mothers across inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Plans, implements, and evaluates patient, family, and staff breastfeeding education activities based on current research and national standards.
  • Ensures all staff members are oriented to the infant feeding policy within six months of hire.
  • Provides antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum classes and support groups on breastfeeding and related topics.
  • Collects and analyzes data to determine breastfeeding initiation and continuation rates.
