About this role

As a PRN Lactation Consultant at Advocate Aurora Health's Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, you will provide expert breastfeeding support to new families in the Birth Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Your guidance helps mothers and infants establish successful feeding relationships during their hospital stay.

In this role, you will conduct patient assessments, develop individualized care plans, and educate families on breastfeeding techniques and lactation management. Your day-to-day work involves direct bedside support, assisting with latch difficulties, and addressing milk supply concerns for both full-term and premature infants.

You will collaborate closely with nurses, midwives, and physicians as part of a dedicated Lactation Services team in a dynamic, family-centered care environment. The role offers the opportunity to apply your clinical expertise in both routine and high-acuity settings, making a meaningful impact at a critical time for new parents.

Requirements

  • Current IBCLC certification (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant)
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of practice
  • BLS certification from the American Heart Association
  • Experience providing lactation support in a hospital Birth Center or NICU setting
  • Ability to assess and manage complex breastfeeding cases
  • Strong clinical assessment and patient education skills

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care and lactation consultation for mothers and infants in the Birth Center and NICU
  • Assess breastfeeding challenges and develop tailored feeding plans for newborns and their families
  • Educate and coach mothers on proper latch techniques, positioning, and milk expression
  • Support infants with special feeding needs, including premature and medically complex babies
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team to ensure comprehensive, evidence-based lactation care
  • Document patient interactions and maintain accurate records of feeding progress and outcomes
