About this role

The Lactation Consultant RN provides expert care and support for breastfeeding and chest-feeding parents and their infants. This role assesses patient and infant needs while developing individualized lactation care plans that promote optimal feeding outcomes in both inpatient and outpatient settings.

Day-to-day work includes teaching proper positioning and latch techniques, managing challenges such as engorgement or low milk supply, and supporting parents of infants with special needs. The consultant also educates families on feeding cues, milk expression, and breast pump use while attending deliveries when needed to initiate support.

At Merit Health River Region the consultant collaborates with the healthcare team to coordinate care and ensure appropriate discharge plans. This includes serving as a resource to other providers and maintaining documentation that meets organizational and regulatory standards.

Requirements

  • 0-2 years of direct experience as a lactation consultant required

Responsibilities

  • Provides specialized lactation care and clinical management for breastfeeding and chest-feeding dyads using evidence-based practices.
  • Assesses patient and infant needs and develops individualized lactation care plans to optimize feeding outcomes.
  • Facilitates breastfeeding by teaching proper positioning, latch techniques, and strategies to manage engorgement or low milk supply.
  • Supports parents of infants with special needs such as premature infants or those with medical conditions.
  • Educates parents on feeding cues, milk expression techniques, and use of manual or electric breast pumps.
  • Collaborates with the healthcare team to coordinate care and provide resources for continued lactation support after discharge.
  • Addresses contraindications to breastfeeding and provides alternative feeding plans or pumping support as necessary.
  • Maintains documentation of patient interactions, care plans, and outcomes in compliance with organizational standards.
