Saint Joseph Health System is seeking a Lactation Consultant to provide breastfeeding support services for both in-patients and out-patients. This PRN role offers the flexibility of as-needed scheduling with the benefit of Daily Pay, allowing you to work today and get paid today.

In this role, you will provide direct breastfeeding support to lactating women post-delivery, including verbal and written instructions on the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding. You will observe and assist mothers and babies during the breastfeeding process, communicate progress to the responsible RN or physician, and complete required documentation.

You will collaborate with nursing staff and physicians on plans of care, discharge instructions, and post-discharge referrals. Responsibilities also include developing and implementing standards of patient teaching for nursing staff, organizing outpatient classes and breastfeeding support groups, and counseling breastfeeding families in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit.

This position offers the opportunity to serve as a resource to patients, staff, and physicians while networking with community agencies. You will also manage the rental of breast pumps and sale of supplies, ensuring appropriate documentation and record keeping.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college credits toward an Associate degree or LPN preferred.
  • Current IBCLC Certification or actively working toward certification.
  • One year of direct counseling experience with breastfeeding families preferred.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to understand human behavior.
  • Assigned hours within your shift, starting time, or days of work are subject to change based on departmental and/or organizational needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct breastfeeding support to all lactating women post-delivery, including verbal and written instructions on the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding.
  • Observe and assist mom and baby during the breastfeeding process, communicating progress to the responsible RN and/or physician.
  • Collaborate with RN and physician on plan of care, discharge instructions, and referrals post-discharge.
  • Develop and implement standards of patient teaching for nursing staff regarding the initiation, maintenance, and discharge of the breastfeeding mom and baby.
  • Organize outpatient classes, breastfeeding support groups, and outpatient referrals as assigned.
  • Counsel and support breastfeeding moms and babies in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit in collaboration with NICU staff and physicians.
  • Serve as a resource to patients, staff, and physicians, and network with community agencies and resources.
  • Manage rental of breast pumps and sale of supplies, including appropriate documentation and record keeping.
