The Clinical Nurse Consultant II (Lactation Consultant Specialist) coordinates lactation services within UI Health, providing patient care and consultation for breastfeeding mothers and their babies. This role develops and implements nursing educational programs for staff, integrating the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model.

Day-to-day duties include assessing breastfeeding dyads, implementing feeding plans, and evaluating latch scores. The CNCII maintains confidentiality and discusses patient information only with appropriate personnel, viewing patients holistically considering physical, psychological, and cultural factors.

UI Health is a tertiary care hospital and part of the University of Illinois Chicago, comprising seven health science colleges. The CNCII acts as a role model in clinical practice, participating in monitoring and evaluating nursing practice while fulfilling unit and organizational goals.

This position offers the opportunity to work within a health system dedicated to health equity and research, with access to resources from multiple colleges. The CNCII strives to improve patient outcomes by integrating Shared Leadership and Evidence Based Practice into clinical care.

Requirements

  • Registered Nurse (RN) license in Illinois.
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Ability to develop and implement nursing educational programs for clinical staff.
  • Demonstrated holistic patient assessment skills including physical, psychological, and cultural factors.
  • Illinois residency required within 180 days of hire date.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates lactation services within UI Health.
  • Develops and implements nursing educational programs for nursing service personnel.
  • Facilitates delivery of patient care utilizing the Nursing Process and Relationship-Based Care model.
  • Demonstrates appropriate assessment skills including interview, inspection, implementation of breastfeeding plan, and latch score evaluation for breastfeeding mother and baby.
  • Views patients holistically, considering physical, psychological, emotional, age-specific, cultural, and spiritual factors.
  • Acts as a role model in clinical practice, participating in monitoring, developing, and evaluating nursing practice.
  • Maintains confidentiality of patient and hospital information, discussing only among appropriate personnel in private places.
  • Recognizes, synthesizes, and responds to patient care needs.
