About this role

The Lactation Consultant is a Registered Nurse who, using critical thinking skills, directs and evaluates patient care activities occurring within her/his assigned area of demonstrated clinical expertise. The LC leads and motivates professional and ancillary staff to develop their breastfeeding practice, knowledge, and skill base. This role ensures coordination with other health care team members for quality patient care.

Daily responsibilities include supporting plans, programs, and schedules as directed by the lead lactation consultant. The LC applies advanced knowledge of perinatal nursing, lactation, and infant care to address clinical breastfeeding issues in Labor & Delivery. Patient care focuses on pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum support.

Requirements

  • 3-5 years clinical experience
  • Advanced knowledge of perinatal nursing practices, anatomy and physiology, pregnancy, labor, birth, lactation, infant care, and clinical breastfeeding issues
  • Current Certification by International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLC)
  • Current Florida RN License
  • American Heart Association BLS and NRP
  • Demonstrate exceptional communication, collaboration, teamwork, and flexibility
  • Serve as role model for delivery of excellent patient care and customer service

Responsibilities

  • Direct and evaluate patient care activities in lactation expertise area
  • Lead and motivate professional and ancillary staff to develop breastfeeding practice, knowledge, and skill base
  • Coordinate with health care team members to ensure quality patient care
  • Support plans, programs, and schedules as directed by lead lactation consultant
  • Provide lactation support to Labor & Delivery patients
  • Address clinical breastfeeding issues using perinatal nursing knowledge
  • Educate on anatomy, physiology, pregnancy, labor, birth, and infant care
