About this role

A United Regional Certified Breastfeeding Specialist serves as a paraprofessional who delivers basic breastfeeding information, encouragement, and support to patients under the direction of IBCLCs and CLCs.

Daily work includes performing breastfeeding assessments with LATCH scores, assisting with latch and positioning, and educating mothers on milk production, supply maintenance, and feeding cues.

The role requires close collaboration with nursing staff and consultants to troubleshoot difficulties such as engorgement or blocked ducts while supporting mothers' feeding choices in the hospital setting.

Additional duties involve assisting with outpatient lactation visits, discharge phone calls, and breastfeeding quality improvement data collection to improve patient outcomes.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing
  • CPR Certification required
  • Certification in Lactation Education preferred or obtain within 6 months of hire
  • Knowledge of the Texas Ten Steps for Breastfeeding and Designation
  • Previous hands-on experience with breastfeeding and knowledge of current standards
  • Demonstrate competencies required on Orientation checklist by a Certified Lactation Consultant

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers including benefits and overcoming common barriers
  • Perform breastfeeding assessment and document findings assigning a LATCH score
  • Provide breastfeeding support with latch, positioning, and discharge teaching
  • Educate mothers on the process of milk production and maintaining milk supply
  • Instruct mothers on massage, hand expression, and pumping techniques
  • Assess infant feeding method and provide feeding instructions for breast or formula fed infants
  • Collaborate care with primary care nurse and nursing staff for further assessment and interventions
  • Assist with breastfeeding Quality Improvement process, data collection, outpatient visits, and discharge phone calls
