About this role

The Lactation Consultant (Non RN) works independently under the direction of the WIC Director to support the mother-infant breastfeeding dyad within the WIC program. This role focuses on assessment, planning, interventions, and evaluation of lactation support and education for postpartum participants.

Daily responsibilities include facilitating breastfeeding support, actively promoting breastfeeding, and helping mothers reach their personal goals. The consultant adjusts teaching methods to accommodate language and literacy needs while evaluating the effectiveness of education provided to participants and families.

The position requires documentation of lactation assessments in the electronic medical record according to practice standards. The consultant utilizes breastfeeding-related equipment and participates in evaluating new products to enhance clinical interventions.

In addition to direct participant care, the role involves conducting breastfeeding trainings for WIC staff and peer counselors as required by the State WIC Agency. Participation in quality improvement initiatives supports ongoing enhancement of lactation services.

Requirements

  • Certified International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
  • Three (3) years clinical experience
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS)
  • Valid driver's license and proof of liability insurance required
  • Knowledgeable and skilled in the physiology and clinical management of breastfeeding
