This professional licensed staff position contributes to the Hospital’s mission by utilizing the nursing process in coordination and delivery of quality, safe clinical care. It provides hands-on assistance and support to all breastfeeding families using compassion, empathy, and respect.

This 24 hour position on day/evening shifts, including weekend and holiday rotations, acts as a hospital-wide resource to educate staff and family members about breastfeeding. It impacts families’ long term success with breastfeeding through comprehensive maternal child feeding assessments and individualized feeding plans. Lactation consultations and triaging of lactation phone calls for nursing mothers are key day-to-day activities.

As part of the Mother Baby Unit team at Winchester Hospital, a 5x Magnet designated 223-bed regional hospital, serves as a consultant for clinical practice within breastfeeding specialty. Consults with hospital nursing staff, obstetric, pediatric, neonatology and family medicine providers. Establishes therapeutic relationships with patients, families and significant others.

Requirements

  • Graduate of a state-approved and/or accredited RN program required; BSN strongly encouraged
  • At least three years of clinical experience as registered nurse in Maternal Child Health
  • At least one year of experience in patient and staff education and lactation consulting (preferred)
  • Valid State of Massachusetts Registered Nurse license
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant certification (IBCLC)
  • Basic Life Support

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a consultant for clinical practice within breastfeeding specialty to the hospital nursing staff, obstetric, pediatric, neonatology and family medicine providers
  • Utilizes the nursing process and evidenced-based practices to provide quality and safe patient care by performing comprehensive maternal child feeding assessments and implementing individualized feeding and nursing plans of care
  • Provides lactation consultations and triages lactation phone calls for nursing mothers
  • Establishes a therapeutic relationship with the patient, the patient's family and significant others by involving them in each step of the process
  • Provides support and encouragement to enable mothers to successfully meet their breastfeeding goals
  • Performs all required documentation accurately, legibly and timely
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment to enhance patient satisfaction and a culture of safety
