About this role
Provides professional nursing care in accordance with patient and family-centered care principles based on the nursing process and hospital clinical standards. Coordinates care planning with other disciplines. Coaches and mentors the Lactation Consultant I while functioning to enhance lactation and manage breastfeeding problems.
The Lactation Consultant assesses, prevents, and manages lactation issues, providing education and consultation for routine and special breastmilk feeding circumstances. Serves as a breastfeeding advocate encouraging informed decision-making. Initiates and manages complex breastfeeding plans of care for inpatients and outpatients.
Recognizes subtle changes in patient condition, analyzes data, and collaborates with multi-disciplinary teams to develop outcome-driven plans. Safely administers treatments and interventions based on assessments. Organizes priorities based on acuity, progress, and workload for optimal breastfeeding outcomes.
Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, patient safety, and shared decision-making through committee involvement. Reads current breastfeeding literature and applies evidence-based research to practice. Documents progress, provides telephone support, and communicates plans during care transitions.
Requirements
- Registered Nurse licensure
- Certified Lactation Consultant qualification
- Meets all expectations of Lactation Consultant I
- Knowledge of nursing process and patient/family-centered care
- Ability to assess, prevent, and manage lactation problems
- Proficiency in breastfeeding advocacy and informed decision-making support
- Experience coordinating care with multi-disciplinary teams
- Familiarity with electronic documentation of breastfeeding outcomes
Responsibilities

- Initiates and manages plans of care for complex assigned inpatients and outpatients
- Provides and coordinates direct care based on patient and family-centered care principles
- Recognizes subtle changes in condition and facilitates multi-disciplinary collaboration for individualized breastfeeding plans
- Safely administers prescribed treatments, medications, and nursing interventions based on breastfeeding assessment
- Organizes and prioritizes time based on breastfeeding acuity, progress, and workload
- Documents patient and newborn response to interventions and progress in electronic record
- Provides telephone assistance, counseling, and referrals for pregnant and lactating women
