About this role

The post holder will be responsible for the co-ordination of all NHS national antenatal and newborn screening programmes within Yeovil District Hospital. They ensure the trust is compliant with recommendations and national programme standards. This leadership role demands specialist knowledge in maternity screening.

Main duties involve counselling women/birthing people and their partners in pre and post-test decision making for screening and bereavement care. Undertake screening procedures, analyse results, and refer to specialist services when required. Provide practical care to families experiencing pregnancy and baby loss or maternal death.

Act as a positive role model with sound professional knowledge, leadership, and training for the multi-disciplinary maternity team. Participate in training, supervision, and mentorship of junior colleagues and student midwives. Support the day-to-day provision of maternity care services.

Develop and implement policies, guidelines, and care pathways for screening programmes. Handle audit, performance management, and quality assurance. Education and training ensure all staff are competent and confident in maternity screening delivery.

Requirements

  • Specialist knowledge and experience in antenatal and newborn screening in maternity services
  • Skills to lead a team and act as a positive role model
  • Sound professional knowledge in maternity screening and bereavement care
  • Ability to provide leadership, training, and mentorship to multi-disciplinary team
  • Competence in counselling for screening decisions and bereavement support
  • Experience in policy development, audit, and quality assurance for screening programmes
  • Prioritise own time and workload to meet priorities without compromising quality
  • Awareness of role in departmental and organisational structure
