About this role

The Registered Nurse - Midwife develops and implements midwifery care plans while maintaining medical records. This role assesses and diagnoses pregnancies and gives prenatal care including malaria prophylaxis and tetanus immunization.

Daily work includes conducting and managing normal deliveries in the clinic setting with supportive care for the mother. The midwife gives safe and clean care to mother and newborn during delivery and immediately afterwards in the post-natal period.

Additional duties cover assessing the newborn and making referrals when needed. The role directs infection control programs and orders and interprets diagnostic tests to evaluate patient condition.

Records of medical information and vital signs are maintained with symptoms and changes reported promptly. Prenatal testing such as blood and glucose testing is provided with ultrasonogram recommendations as required.

Requirements

  • Must have completed four years of training in the specific fields of study from a recognized nursing & midwifery school.
  • A combined bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) plus Certificate in midwifery, or a combined bachelor’s degree in midwifery (BSM) plus bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) are requirements.
  • Hold a current license from the Liberian Board of Nursing & Midwifery (LBNM) with CPD credits.
  • Active registered member of their specific professional association.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of practice in Liberia, with working experience in Grand Bassa as an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and implements midwifery care plans and maintains medical records.
  • Assesses and diagnoses pregnancies.
  • Gives prenatal care to all pregnant women, including malaria prophylaxis and tetanus immunization.
  • Identifies mothers at risk and makes the necessary referrals in consultation with the MD.
  • Conducts and manages all normal deliveries in the clinic setting, giving supportive care to the mother.
  • Assesses the newborn and makes referrals if necessary.
  • Gives safe and clean care to the mother and newborn during delivery and immediately afterwards (post-natal).
  • Directs and coordinates infection control programs, advising and consulting with specified personnel about necessary precautions.
