About this role

The lactation consultant practices in a manner that protects, promotes and supports breastfeeding. Uses and communicates current evidence-based information while recognizing philosophical, cultural, and ethical perspectives. Seeks coordination and collaboration with interdisciplinary teams including staff nurses and MDs.

Works with nursing staff on assessments to maximize data for care plan development and intervention. Knowledgeable and skilled in the evidenced-based Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, physiology, and clinical management. Identifies patient needs and priorities through assessment, plans and delegates care based on those needs.

Evaluates the patient’s response to care and progress toward expected outcomes. Assists with maintaining outpatient services for prenatal or continuing care via phone, visits, support groups, supply sales, classes, and bra fittings. Provides regularly scheduled prenatal breastfeeding classes to prospective mothers and support persons.

Participates in staff education classes, community LC meetings, and identifies opportunities for Quality Improvement. Reports collected data to manager on ongoing basis at Huntsville Hospital, named Best Regional Hospital and #2 in Alabama by U.S. News & World Report. Offers training center, Shared Governance, Clinical Ladder, and Nurse Residency Program.

Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing
  • Alabama nursing license
  • IBCLC certification preferred within 18 months of hire
  • BLS required before conclusion of orientation period
  • Experience preferred; new graduates accepted
  • Knowledgeable in evidenced-based Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding
  • Skilled in physiology and clinical management of breastfeeding
