About this role
With a commitment to patient- and family-centered care, the Lactation Consultant RN uses the nursing process valuing the uniqueness of each individual. This role addresses physical, psychological, emotional, and social needs of diverse patients at Jefferson Health. The RN provides safe, family-centered care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans for breastfeeding/chest-feeding dyads and pumping parents.
The Lactation Consultant demonstrates specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding/chest-feeding and human lactation. Responsibilities include providing consultation to inpatients and outpatients, offering post-delivery care on breastfeeding/chest-feeding, family bonding, and planning. The role involves evaluating patient responses to care and initiating independent or collaborative changes where appropriate.
The RN interacts with co-workers, patients, families, and staff consistent with Jefferson values, integrating evidence-based practice and patient preferences. Functions effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams, fostering open communication and shared decision-making. Creates an environment of belonging and inclusion with skills in problem solving and conflict resolution.
Demonstrates commitment to learning, seeks professional growth, and acts as primary preceptor to staff. Actively participates in hospital- and practice-based committees on safety and quality improvement. Provides education in ways that are useful, understandable, and affirming, partnering with patients and families.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing required
- BSN or completion of BSN within 3 years of hire strongly preferred
- Experience in maternal/child nursing
- Demonstrated experience in planning, implementing and evaluating teaching/learning experiences
- Patient-and Family-Centered Practice Knowledge of how to convey respect and collaborate with each patient, family and/or designated care partner
- Cultural Awareness Knowledge of people with diverse backgrounds and the ability to convey respect and connect effectively

Responsibilities
- Assess, plan, implement, and evaluate lactation plans for the breastfeeding/chest-feeding dyad and pumping parent
- Provide consultation to inpatients and/or outpatients regarding lactation to meet care needs
- Offer post-delivery consultative care to patients on breastfeeding/chest-feeding, family bonding, and planning
- Evaluate patient's response to care and initiate independent and/or collaborative changes where appropriate
- Facilitate prenatal classes in the ambulatory setting
- Support ambulatory practices with lactation training and consultation
- Integrate evidence-based practice, clinical expertise, and patient family preferences for optimal healthcare
- Function effectively within nursing and inter-professional teams to achieve quality patient care
