Participates as interdisciplinary patient care team member to provide lactation services and education to meet needs of identified patient population within the scope of the medical center’s mission and values. Demonstrates expertise in care of mothers/infants with complex breastfeeding problems and determines breastfeeding plan for children requiring hospitalization. Evaluates positive signs of lactogenesis, latching on, adequacy of breast milk intake, and issues with breasts or pumping equipment. Implements appropriate teaching interventions based on infant’s clinical condition and mother’s progress.

Implements standards of care and policies for breastfeeding management, including quality control in breast milk collection, transport, storage, and feeding. Designs procedures for nourishment of breastfeeding mothers and procurement of lactation equipment. Monitors inpatient lactation management standard of care and access to electric breast pumps.

Assists in assessing, planning, and evaluating teaching materials for breastfeeding used by patients and healthcare providers. Directs lactation training and education of clinical staff through competency-based programs. Join a people-first culture where Children always come first.

Requirements

  • Experience in pediatric populations from birth through early childhood
  • Bachelor of Science in Dietetics, Education, Nursing, or related field
  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
  • Demonstrates and maintains current knowledge and skills necessary to provide care/services appropriate to the age of patients served
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of lactation equipment procurement and maintenance
  • Ability to design and monitor inpatient lactation management standards
  • Competency in evaluating breastfeeding goals and infant clinical conditions

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates expertise in care of mothers/infants with complex breastfeeding problems
  • Determines breastfeeding plan and provides instruction and support to mothers breastfeeding children requiring hospitalization
  • Evaluates positive signs of lactogenesis and latching on
  • Evaluates adequacy of breast milk intake and determines appropriate goals
  • Evaluates and monitors any problems or complaints related to breasts or pumping equipment
  • Implements standards of care and policies and procedures for breastfeeding management
  • Designs, implements, and monitors policies for breast milk collection, transport, storage, and feeding
  • Directs lactation training and education of clinical staff
