The Certified Lactation Consultant has specialized education and extensive experience managing breastfeeding family needs. Using a family-centered approach, assist mothers from pre-conception through weaning to meet individual goals.

Perform inpatient consults by contacting the patient’s nurse, visiting the mother for history intake, assessing infant feeding and latch, and providing tailored feeding plans. Conduct outpatient consults with hands-on assistance, care plans, follow-ups, and referrals. Handle phone consultations including follow-ups for NICU mothers and helpline concerns.

Function as a multidisciplinary team member, acting as consultant, instructor, and mentor to healthcare professionals and clients in hospital and community settings. Work hand-in-hand with prenatal and postpartum providers to support breastfeeding goals. Serve as a resource to nursing staff, leadership, and medical staff.

Maintain confidentiality and serve as a professional role model. Support performance improvement initiatives for quality patient care. Engage in internal and external breastfeeding education, designing programs based on evidence and patient needs.

Requirements

  • Specialized education and extensive experience in breastfeeding family care
  • Understanding of age-specific physiological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and spiritual needs
  • IBCLC certification or IBCLC preceptor with check-off for consultations if not certified
  • Ability to manage complex, multiple-problem breastfeeding situations
  • Skills in family-centered education from pre-conception through weaning
  • Experience as consultant, instructor, and mentor in hospital and community settings
  • Current clinical knowledge for evidence-based curriculum and patient education

Responsibilities

  • Contact patient’s nurse for pertinent information during inpatient consults

  • Perform phone follow-ups for NICU mothers and Breastfeeding Center outpatients
