About this role

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC Program) is seeking an experienced International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) to serve the Boston North region. In this role, you will be the guiding light for high-risk pregnant individuals and breastfeeding parent/baby pairs. Your expertise in lactation will provide direct support, education, and consultation to ensure every family receives the care they need.

Reporting directly to the Breastfeeding Peer Counselor Program Coordinator, you will offer immediate consultation to WIC Peer Counselors, co-facilitate mentoring and guidance of peer counseling staff, and deliver staff training in clinical lactation topics. Handle referrals from PCs and WIC staff for complex breastfeeding challenges beyond their scope. Assess dyads, develop care plans, and communicate them to the breastfeeding team.

This position requires flexible working hours with availability for timely consultations via in-person visits, phone calls, or video chats, including evenings and weekends. Travel to local WIC programs is required. Refer parents or babies to healthcare providers for further medical assessment as needed.

Participate in statewide meetings of the Breastfeeding Task Force and peer counselor trainings. May promote breastfeeding within the community. Maintain your IBCLC credential while building skills in WIC staff through targeted training at local programs or WIC’s Learning Center.

Requirements

  • International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
  • Maintain IBCLC credential
  • Flexible working hours with availability for evenings and weekends
  • Ability to respond timely for consultations via in-person, phone, or video
  • Willingness to travel to local WIC programs
  • Experience supporting high-risk pregnant individuals and breastfeeding dyads
  • Knowledge of complex breastfeeding challenges beyond peer counselor scope

Responsibilities

  • Act on referrals from PCs and other WIC staff regarding complex breastfeeding challenges beyond their scope of practice
  • Assess and counsel the dyad with complex breastfeeding challenges and contribute towards the development of a care plan
  • Communicate care plan to the rest of the WIC breastfeeding team, as appropriate
  • Co-facilitate the mentoring and guidance of peer counseling staff to help build skills in breastfeeding counseling
  • Refer parent to their or their baby’s healthcare provider(s) for further assessment and medical care as needed
  • Provide staff training in clinical lactation topics to WIC nutrition staff at local WIC programs and/or at WIC’s Learning Center
  • Participate in statewide meetings of the Breastfeeding Task Force and peer counselor trainings
  • Promote breastfeeding within the community
