The Lactation Consultant has specialized education and extensive experience in managing the needs and care of the breastfeeding family.

Using a family-centered approach, address physiological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and spiritual needs from pre-conception through weaning. Deliver patient care in complex, multiple-problem breastfeeding situations. Function as a consultant, instructor, and mentor to health care professionals and clients in hospital and community settings.

Perform inpatient consults by contacting the patient's nurse, visiting the mother for history intake, assessing infant feeding and latch, and providing individualized feeding plans. Handle outpatient consults with hands-on assistance, plans of care, and referrals. Conduct phone consultations including follow-ups for NICU mothers and helpline support.

Serve as a professional role model, mentor for peers and students, and resource to nursing and medical staff. Support performance improvement initiatives and work with prenatal/postpartum providers to meet breastfeeding goals. Maintain current clinical knowledge and promote breastfeeding policies and education internally and in the community.

Requirements

  • Specialized education and extensive experience in managing the needs and care of the breastfeeding family
  • Understanding of age-specific physiological, emotional, developmental, psychosocial, and spiritual needs
  • Ability to deliver patient care in complex, multiple-problem breastfeeding situations
  • Functions independently as consultant, instructor, and mentor/preceptor to health care professionals
  • Serves as professional role model within professional designation
  • Maintains confidentiality and current clinical knowledge
  • Identifies patient learning needs based on age-specific criteria

Responsibilities

  • Contact patient's nurse for pertinent information and visit mother for introductions and history intake
  • Assess infant feeding and latch, providing feeding plan specific to mother/baby's individual needs/goals
  • Conduct outpatient consults with history intake, hands-on assistance, plan of care, follow-up, and referrals
  • Provide report to healthcare provider via fax and phone if needed
  • Perform phone consultations including follow-ups for NICU mothers and Breastfeeding Center outpatients
  • Answer helpline calls to address breastfeeding concerns
  • Serve as mentor and resource to nursing staff, leadership, medical staff, and students
  • Support performance improvement initiatives and breastfeeding education/promotion
