About this role
Elliot Hospital’s Women's and Children's Services are dedicated to addressing the specific health and wellness needs of women and their children. The Maternity unit is a 24-26 bed unit averaging 14 mother/baby patients with 55 employees. Patients include high and low risk postpartum moms and babies 35 weeks gestation and above, substance-exposed infants, and management of hyperbilirubinemia and hypoglycemia.
The lactation consultant provides comprehensive lactation services to meet the needs of professional providers, antepartum, post-partum lactating women and their families within Elliot Hospital and the community. This role promotes successful lactation through collaboration with the Women and Children’s health team and families. It involves establishing a team approach and reporting needs to healthcare providers.
Daily lactation rounds occur on Maternity, NICU, Pediatrics, and other departments within the Elliot Hospital system. The consultant assesses, plans, implements, and documents individualized lactation plans for consistent patient care. Expertise is demonstrated in managing mother/infant complex breastfeeding problems and at-risk infants.
Follow-up calls are made with families facing breastfeeding problems, and telephone support is provided via the Lactation Warm Line. Protocols and guidelines are established for standards of care, with ongoing in-service education for nursing and medical staff. Consultation is offered for Moms Group and other Elliot services as requested.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing (BSN preferred)
- Current New Hampshire, compact, or multistate licensure as Registered Nurse required
- Certified through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners required
- At least three (3) years of clinical experience in an acute healthcare institution
- Ability to obtain BLS qualification during orientation period and maintain during employment
Responsibilities
- Collaborates with Women and Children’s health team and families to establish and maintain a team approach to promote successful lactation
- Consults and reports the needs of lactating families to healthcare providers
- Performs daily lactation rounds on Maternity, NICU, Pediatrics and other departments within the Elliot Hospital system
- Assesses, plans, implements and documents an individualized lactation plan to promote consistent patient care
- Demonstrates expertise in care of mother/infant complex breastfeeding problems and at-risk infants
- Performs follow-up calls with families with breastfeeding problems or at-risk infants
- Provides telephone support on Lactation Warm Line regarding breastfeeding issues and outpatient or referral appointments
- Establishes and maintains protocols and guidelines related to standards of care for assisting breastfeeding mothers
