The Lactation Consultant works directly with breastfeeding mothers supporting the mother/baby breastfeeding dyad. Develops plan of care and reinforces it with patient and nursing staff.

Solves breastfeeding problems and brings them to resolution while promoting breastfeeding in the community. Supports breastfeeding initiatives and provides ongoing education for patients and nursing staff. Applies nursing process and theories, as well as principles of psycho-social and physical sciences.

Builds effective networks and working relationships to collaborate within department and organization. Provides guidance and feedback to strengthen team knowledge and skills. Fosters commitment by facilitating cooperation toward goal accomplishments.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing
  • 1-2 years of experience as Lactation Consultant required
  • Certified by the International Board of Lactation Examiners / CLC
  • Child Birth Educator and Certified in Child Birth Education strongly preferred
  • BLS through American Heart Association, for healthcare providers
  • NRP through American Heart Association
  • BSN or completed within 3 years of start date preferred

Responsibilities

  • Work directly with breastfeeding mothers supporting the mother/baby breastfeeding dyad
  • Develop plan of care and reinforce plan with patient and nursing staff
  • Solve breastfeeding problems and bring them to resolution
  • Promote breastfeeding in the community and support breastfeeding initiatives
  • Provide ongoing education for patients and nursing staff
  • Apply nursing process and theories, as well as principles of psycho-social and physical sciences
  • Practice autonomously within professional nursing standards, the ANA Code of Ethics and the ANA Bill of Rights
