Provides lactation consultation and educational services to breastfeeding families, nursing staff, midwives and physicians. Voices concerns to pediatrician if breastfeeding is not going well prior to time of discharge. Assesses patients pumping needs and addresses availability of breast pumps based on insurance.

Provides breastfeeding education to patients having difficulty and acts as support service to staff. Plans teaching on anatomy and physiology of breast, physiology of milk transfer, effects of toxins and medications. Demonstrates utilization of evidence-based practices in breastfeeding and professional practice.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree or Diploma in Nursing
  • New hires required to obtain BSN within 5 years of hire
  • Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS)
  • Must successfully pass International Board Certified Lactation Consultant exam within 30 months of hire
  • Registered Nurse
  • Experience in Maternity
  • 2-3 years clinical experience

Responsibilities

  • Voice concerns to pediatrician if breastfeeding is not going well prior to discharge
  • Provide breastfeeding education to patients having difficulty breastfeeding and support to staff
  • Plan teaching on anatomy and physiology of breast, physiology of milk transfer, effects of toxins and medications
  • Assess patients pumping needs and address availability of breast pump based on insurance
  • Provide resource list as needed
  • Demonstrate utilization of evidence-based practices in breastfeeding and professional practice
  • Work as a team and develop education materials for patients, nursing, and medical professionals
  • Complete patient assessment, incorporate breastfeeding skills, and document plan of care
