About this role

The RN Lactation Specialist reports to the Breastfeeding Support Services Coordinator. They practice in a manner that protects, promotes, and supports breastfeeding while using and communicating current evidence-based information. They recognize and respect philosophical, cultural, and ethical perspectives influencing breastfeeding care delivery.

Daily responsibilities include identifying patient needs through assessment, planning and delegating care based on those needs, and evaluating patient response to interventions. Lactation consultants are knowledgeable in breastfeeding physiology, clinical management, and the evidenced-based Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding. They assist with outpatient services such as phone support, visits, support groups, classes, and bra fittings.

Collaboration occurs with interdisciplinary teams including staff nurses and physicians to maximize data for care plans. They work closely with nursing staff on assessments and interventions. Coordination ensures comprehensive breastfeeding support across the hospital.

Growth opportunities include regular continuing education to maintain IBCLC certification, providing prenatal breastfeeding classes, and participating in staff education. They engage in community lactation consultant meetings and identify quality improvement opportunities, reporting data to management. Requirements

  • Graduate of accredited school of nursing
  • Current Alabama RN licensure
  • BLS required by conclusion of orientation period
  • IBCLC certification completed within 18 months of hire preferred
  • Experience preferred; new graduates accepted
  • Knowledgeable in physiology and clinical management of breastfeeding
  • Understanding of evidenced-based Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding

Responsibilities

  • Practice in a manner that protects, promotes, and supports breastfeeding
  • Use and communicate current evidence-based information on breastfeeding
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of health professionals including staff nurses and MDs
  • Assess patient needs, plan and delegate care, and evaluate outcomes
  • Provide regularly scheduled prenatal breastfeeding classes and staff education
  • Assist with outpatient services for mothers and infants including phone calls, visits, and support groups
  • Attend continuing education classes to maintain IBCLC certification
  • Participate in community lactation consultant meetings and identify quality improvement opportunities
