About this role
The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) works to eliminate racial and other inequities resulting in premature mortality. Grounded in history and structural analysis, CHECW partners with community, faith-based, and health care organizations to address social determinants of health. The Office of the Chief Medical Officer seeks a Senior Advisor to serve as lead strategist for maternal behavioral health.
The Senior Advisor will identify needs related to maternal behavioral health and collaborate across the department and with external partners. They will develop, implement, and evaluate strategies to ensure a holistic focus on maternal health. Reporting to the Deputy Chief Medical Officer, the role emphasizes data-driven alignment and inter-divisional coordination.
CHECW comprises bureaus focused on neighborhood health, chronic disease prevention, and equitable systems, overseen by the Chief Equity Officer. The role facilitates communication via existing workgroups like PMADS/SUD and CMO Birth Equity sub-group. Partnerships include Division of Mental Hygiene, NYC Health and Hospitals, and academic institutions.
Opportunities involve elevating maternal behavioral health for Healthy NYC goals and leading implementations from Maternal Mortality Review recommendations. This includes workforce development, provider education on opioid therapy, naloxone distribution, and harm reduction materials. The position fosters redress for impacted NYC communities through strategic behavioral health initiatives.
Requirements
- Master's degree in public health, epidemiology, or related field
- Expertise in maternal behavioral health and epidemiology
- Experience analyzing behavioral health data and programming outcomes
- Knowledge of maternal mortality review recommendations and birth equity initiatives
- Ability to collaborate across health divisions and with external stakeholders
- Familiarity with social determinants of health and structural inequities
- Skills in developing strategies for opioid agonist therapy, pain management, and harm reduction in maternity care
Responsibilities
- Serve as the Health Department lead strategist and coordinator for maternal behavioral health
- Elevate the need to address maternal behavioral health needs as critical for achieving Healthy NYC goals
- Collaborate with Division leads and program directors to map current need and reach for existing programming
- Facilitate inter-divisional communication and collaboration, leveraging existing workgroups including the PMADS/SUD group and CMO Birth Equity sub-group
- Build relationships and foster collaboration with subject matter experts within the Division of Mental Hygiene
- Work with programs to regularly review behavioral health and programming data to identify opportunities for alignment such as referral pathways
- Lead implementation of behavioral health activities to carry out NYC Maternal Mortality Review Community recommendations
- Liaise with external partners including New York City Health and Hospitals, NYC Administration for Children's Services, and academic partners
